It all started with a simple rap track…
On social networks, it doesn’t take much to start a trend. The slightest gesture, however spontaneous, goes viral, spreading like wildfire or a contagious virus. Such is the case with the Go Meg Challenge thati is currently breaking all records. But really, what is this trend? Where did it come from? And above all, who’s behind it? These are just some of the questions we’re going to answer in this article, and shed some light on the subject if you’ve missed out or don’t understand what’s going on.

What is the Go Meg Challenge?
The Go Meg Challenge, also known as “Wanna Be Challenge”, is a dance trend that’s been gaining popularity on TikTok in recent days. This dance is performed to the track “Wanna Be” by GloRilla and Megan Thee Stallion released on 05 April 2024. In fact, this clip, which has racked up over 9 million views on Youtube, is the very essence of this Go Meg Challenge trend.
Thus, the Go Meg usually features, according to media outlet Knowyourmeme, women twerking to the punchline “Go Meg, Go Meg”from the track in question.
Who started this trend?
The first spark in this trend came from the track’s very performer, in this case Megan Thee Stallion. So, on April 07, 2 days after the clip’s release, Megan took to Instagram to post a video of herself twerking to the punchline “Go Meg Go Meg”. In the caption, the American artist noted “IG after dark mdr and no one better not challenge me because this is the best cu**l on IG, or if you think so, tag me in your video, spread WANNA BE”. It didn’t take much to set the web alight.
Just like that, on April 08, the very next day, rapper Latto lent herself to the game and posted on the same social network, a video of herself twerking to the track ” Wanna Be “. Megan Thee Stallion re-shared the video on her IG account and since then the ” Go Meg Challenge “ trend has been launched and is all the rage on the web.
We don’t know whether Megan Thee Stallion had launched this challenge knowingly and with some calculation, or whether it was just spontaneous. In any case, the buzz and promotion for the track in question went down well, even if some people are having fun making the same ones.
The track is unusable on TikTok
However, it’s worth noting that despite its success and virality, due to the twerking craze that accompanies it, TikTok users won’t be able to use the track on the platform, and this is due to a disagreement between Universal Music Group and the app.
As a reminder, TikTok and Universal Media have failed to reach a new agreement allowing TikTok to use music by Universal Music artists. In an open letter to its artist community published on its website, Universal Music criticized TikTok for not fairly remunerating its artists’ music, while revealing that the ByteDance platform represents less than one percent of its sales. For its part, TikTok criticized the decision, deeming it “unreasonable”, and stressing the importance of its support as a platform with over a billion users, offering a showcase of free promotion and discovery for talent.
