1-Who is Mothica?
McKenzie Ashton Ellis, born March 12, 1995, better known by her stage name Mothica, is an American singer. According to her Wikipedia page, she grew up in Oklahoma City and started making music at the age of 18. Since 2015, she’s released numerous albums and singles, available on various music streaming platforms. In June 2020, a TikTok video she posted featuring her song “VICES” went viral, significantly boosting her recognition as a musician and singer.
2-She Suffered from Depression and Self-Harm
Having experienced depression and self-harm, Mothica has also been a victim of domestic violence and assault. According to her Wikipedia page, she even attempted suicide on January 29, 2011. As she explains on her website, discussing mental health issues openly was taboo, which is why she turned to the internet to find a sense of support.
3-She Didn’t Intend to Become a Musician
Although she composed music as a child, Ellis had no plans to become a professional musician. It wasn’t until the age of 18 that she started producing music for public release. She studied at Harding Fine Arts Academy before earning a scholarship to the Pratt Institute to study visual web development, which led her to move to Brooklyn in 2013. During her first year at the Pratt Institute, a classmate introduced her to SoundCloud and lent her a MIDI keyboard. According to Last.fm, between classes, McKenzie wrote music as a form of catharsis against rigid school assignments. During the second semester, she shared some of her compositions with a classmate, who introduced her to several electronic music producers on SoundCloud, lent her a MIDI keyboard, and encouraged her to get a proper microphone. Her first SoundCloud release, “Starchild” (produced by Melodrama), was played 100,000 times within 24 hours.

According to Chairyoursound, the alt-pop artist Mothica has announced a new album, “KISSING DEATH,” set to be released on August 23, 2024, through Heavy Heart Records in partnership with Rise Records. “KISSING DEATH” is a visual album that tells an immersive story across 12 tracks and their interconnected music videos.
